Carhartt WIP proudly presents Five Elements Festival, the latest in a series of events by _thek – a multilocal space for arts, design and culture. Largely situated in NRW, the collective of designers, illustrators, photographers and journalists seek out abandoned spaces and give them a new purpose for a short amount of time. Each _thek event includes a curated exhibition and events inspired by the space they use. Presale tickets are available at Carhartt WIP stores in Cologne & Düsseldorf.
On Saturday, 9th of September _thek will revive the abandoned lot of postPOST Grand Central in Düsseldorf, creating an old-school jam under the bridge while trains pass by. The exhibition will focus on a selection of works by Foto Schiko – who has been documenting the subculture of Hip Hop for the past twenty years – but all five elements of Hip Hop will be represented on the day. Curated Graffiti and a workshop for the younger ones will expand upon the event’s aesthetics, meanwhile B-Boys and Fly-Girls from Tanzhaus NRW will perform, with Spoken Word sessions taking place on the same stage. The event has been created in collaboration with Nyati Collective, an international group of 12 artists who will also be spitting bars on Saturday.
The eclectic on- and offline Callshop Radio will host a stage inside a vintage firefighter truck, with acts like Lord Folter, Omaure und DJ Barilla from Nyati, as well as AzudemSK, Nick MItdemkopf, Jake GHNM, MC ACiom, Flitz&Suppe, Tusken, Philantrope and Sommers Sons from the UK taking to the stage. To set the tone, boom bap legends Twit One and Suff Daddy will be on hand to showcase their skills.
Since the project is all about bringing back analog places to interact, connect and exchange inspiration, the _thek kiosk is a central aspect of every event. At the self-designed kiosk you can buy zines from international illustrators, art prints and apparel. Initiator of _thek is no other than Carhartt WIP apparel designer Deniz Weber. As a result, there will not only be a collection of T-Shirts and Sweaters by _thek and internationals design peers, but also a limited edition of T-Shirts especially designed for the Five Elements Festival in a cooperation with Carhartt WIP available at the kiosk.
