As a hobbyist, Pierre Hourquet started with the idea to develop a blog, Hobbyday where he could reference and archive photographer's images, all related to hobbies and practices. New pictures are still being posted on it weekly and selected ones have been printed in small publications. Later on, Pierre started Hobbyist, a fanzine collection in which contributing photographers like Nicholas Gottlund, Ye Rin Mok, Jennilee Marigomen or Will Adler document their own practice or other people's hobbies. Each issue comes in a small colour portfolio and focuses on particular hobbies, such as gardening, hiking, surfing, collecting...

At the very start of things, before turning into an obsession, a profession, or lord behold, a means of expression or a way of life, skateboarding is always a hobby.
Hobby: n. pl. hob·bies. An activity or interest pursued outside one’s regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.
As much as the majority of people keep engaging in skateboarding primarily for pleasure, in a lot of cases it fails to stay outside of one’s regular occupation. In those cases, skateboarding takes the lead and at least mentally becomes a regular occupation. What originally was a pastime grows out of proportion and is no longer content with only spare time. The practicer’s schedule is then adapted in favor of skateboarding, sometimes to a point where it is the only constant, next to the fulfillment of primary needs. What was originally a time-consuming activity has now created an abundance of it, as one can easily claim to “eat, sleep, skate” but hardly ever really does. Physical limitations (sore muscles or injuries inhibiting pleasure) and mental saturation (too much of anything is never a good thing) along with bad weather make for a vast amount of time that no longer has a set purpose.
This issue of Hobbyist, put together by Pierre Hourquet, consists of four photographical series on what the following members of the Carhartt skateboard team have chosen to do with this time. Jan Solenthaler’s drawing shot by Alan Maag, Jussi Toropainen and his band Tombstoned by Deeli, Jerome Campbell’s photography by Neil Chester and Deshi’s writing by Bertrand Trichet.
