“The first Endless Grind Session happened on the miniramp at the Geschwister-Scholl-Haus in Neuss, Germany in 1996. The Blurr Concerts Crew – Carsten Johannisbauer, Andi Artelt, Frank Pessel & Pascal Wiens – organised there d.i.y. punkshows in the mid-90ies. When on tour with punkbands Kina and Free Yourself, Carsten met Bettina a the Schlachthof Bremen and since then, 1997, the Endless Grind Session found a new home in the Concrete Bowl in front of the Schlachthof.
The Endless Grind Session is public and free, so there are no entry fees or admission prices.
The entire engineering and the bulk of the team is made up of employees of the Cultural Center Schlachthof Bremen. In addition, Bettina Geile and Pascal Wiens organize the endless grind session. Achim Launert was replaced on the mic by Wolfgangster and Fab – together they skate for nearly 50 years because he and Carsten got to old lo leave the couches.
The posters, shirts and flyers have been and are always designed by artist friends such as Ali Boell, Ole Kaleschke, Carsten Johannisbauer or Michael Liskowsky. In addition, each year, many volunteers contribute their share to the success of the Endless Grind Session by judging, playing records or films or simply cleaning up.
The prizes are sponsored by various skateboard companies like Vans, Carhartt, Converse, Concrete Wave Cologne, Rough Distribution & Santa Cruz Skateboards, Cleptomanicx, Eastpak, Rebel Rockers, Sleibnir/Robotron, Forvert, Irie Daily and Pavel Skates. Sometimes there are also rarities from the flea market in addition to the skateboard medals or cups.
The centerpiece of the street course is an old car. In addition to it there are Jumpramps, a quarterpipe and curbs on the street course. Now and then there are a new obstacles added. Besides street there are contests pool, high jump and long jump contests, where the session idea is most important.
Besides the small contests we ever had a band playing by the pool. It was Quest For Rescue, Nothing in Common, Dogtown Boys, Cave 4, Hanns Martin Slayer, Stone’s Ramones cover band, Adolescents, Ultrafair, Strether and many more.
Among the 800 visitors and participants of a session can be found many familiar faces or real surprises, such as Duncan “Wurzel” Houlton (ex-Pro Deathbox around 1990, then Deathbox / now flip), Dirk Wehnes, Patrick King Cobra “Ehling, Thilo Nawrocki, Martin Broich, Christian Pelz, Leo Leifert, Matt Grabowski, Quirin Obermaier or Richie Löffler over the years. Not to forget the Boardstein Crew Arne Fiehl, Klaas Mark Kleinschmidt and in earlier times Mhüller.
The Endless Grind Session has been published since 1997 in the Endless Grind Videomag regularly irregular. Issue # 9 “skate or die trying” came out on DVD in Spring 2010.
There are now also Endless Grind Skateboards, which are manufactured in the USA and of course shirts, longsleeves and hoodies. Check out the Products Page.
