The Sound of Detroit series celebrates the incredibly fertile musical culture of Detroit, laying claim to some of the boldest and most vibrant pioneers in music’s history. In the first edition of the series Carhartt WIP pays homage to Dennis Coffey, Hasting Street Jazz Experience, Cybotron and, the Lyman Woodard Organisation.
To accompany it we will introduce each T-Shirt with a little text about the record whose cover is printed on it. Here comes the short story of Lyman Woodard Organisation – Saturday Night Special (Strata, 1975), writen by Alex Chase:
As musical director of Martha and the Vandellas, organist Lyman Woodard played his part in Motown’s huge success in 1960s Detroit. After the label moved to LA in 1972 Woodard stayed behind, and his trio released this classic funky Jazz LP on the cult Strata label in 1975. Legend has it that the unusual art came out of a meeting with his label, who asked him to empty his pockets on a restaurant table. Out came the gun, the money, and so on, and a vinyl artwork classic was born.
