“Pontus Alv can without question be described as one of the most important figures in european skateboard history. As a teenager in the mid 90ties he was already skating for the american skateboard company “Mad Circle” and thereafter for the french company “Clichè Skateboards” whose videos have been famous for documenting numerous tours, thereby being a vital influence for the skateboard scene at the outset of this century.
Since the last 10 years Pontus spend much time besides skateboarding in filming and photography. His first movie “The Strongest of the Strange” is today seen as important contribution to european skate video. His movie has clearly been dedicated to the local cosmos of his hometown Malmö. This is where he initialized and addressed many rearrangements and interventions as forms of spatial practice, that have been part of skateboard culture from the start. His “social sculptures”, as what he likes to call them, have created a rethinking and restructuring of public space and thus established several official skatepark projects.
Pontus is said to be one pioneer of DIY culture in skateboarding. In times of allegedly limitless opportunities his work as an artist tries to focus on the essential ideas of skateboarding, to retain an alternative experience of the city and the very space for the forthcoming generations of young skateboarders. To show them that there is some terrain to be explored beyond “mega rails” and the often intended “skateboard career.” The dialogue took place due to the release of his novel movie “In Search of the Miraculous” that is currently being released worldwide.
With 34 colored illustrations from his recent movie the 13. issue of Hellozine as an hybrid of text and phonebook. The Video grabs from “In Search of the Miraculous” create an inside in the rich image-cosmos of Alv, while the text passage discusses intensively the matters of media strategies, image generation, the band Joy Division, and death as a stylistic device.
The dialogue between Alexander Basile and Pontus Alv has been continually expanded over the past 10 years, and was held in places including a sauna in Malmö, a Berlin subway, and eventually the steppe of Mongolia, and finally ended on 7. of august 2010 with a sound recorder in a Hotel in Basel.
The Hellozine number 13 is a limited edition of 100 copies including a self painted print by Pontus Alv.”
