“I started taking photos with a Ricoh reflex camera my dad gave me. I shot a few photos of my girlfriend and my friends skating, and it got serious while I was in New York. The city is so photogenic and inspiring, and my friends were good skaters…I had no choice but to start taking photos. Skateboarding made me travel a lot and I’ve got many good memories on the road. One of the best is an improvised road trip i had with Gianni Zattoni and some friends a long time ago. We laughed so much, I still think about it now…Any time I spent in Corsica was great (those guys are mad and i love them). Slovenia with Steve Forstner and Stefan Sperka was definitely a good one. Skating in Istanbul with the Emerica guys, it’s a city that my wife made me discover and that I really love…I also had some amazing moments in California while travelling with Oli Buergin…I could go forever. So many good memories. I hope my photos can tell those stories, this is why I take them.
I shoot mostly analog photos. I’m very into old photos and i collect family photos from the beginning of the 20th century and I really have big nostalgia issues. I shoot digital because the brands i go on trip for ask me too and it’s more convenient for ads or fast use, but to be honest, i don’t like it. It’s convenient and faster. Everything is faster nowadays, that doesn’t make them any better. I wish people could take their time again. I live in a modern world, I’m completely part of it but I wish we could go back a little and learn to appreciate things more, watch more, enjoy more…
I use a lot of different cameras and i’m not a big technology fan, so it’s pretty basic. I’m not stuck on one format or one only type of photography. My favorite weapons would be the Nikon fm2 and Mamyia c220. I spend more time printing than shooting the photo. so I should as well tell you that I use a LpL enlarger but who cares about this, right?
I’ve been travelling with Oli Buergin and the Etnies, Emerica and Es european skaters for almost 10 years now. I enjoyed every trip and tried to put as much input in the teams and their image. I did a few things for Carrhart here and there and they supported me for most of my exhibitions. I had a few restrospective exhibitions in the past years and I’m now working on a new one. It’s gonna be a nostalgic view of photography, mostly landscapes and kids eye. I’m interested in the way kids see things, I’m also really into the way regular people shoot or used to shoot their photos, the common interest, the photo everyone takes. It comes together with my new website. I just finished it for the beginning of 2009 and I am quite satisfied with it.
I’m a bit scared of the turn skateboarding medias and magazines are taking. Magazines should always stay nice objects that you want to look at sometimes, but more and more they turn into newspages with promotional content that could as well be replaced by webpages. I would love skateboarding photography and magazines to stay as creative as it has always been. Keep it on paper, nice paper. Now I’m going to keep on travelling, take many photos, enjoy the years of skateboarding I still have and “be hated by many and really loved by a few”!
Au plaisir,
Eric
