With a focus on photography, Pozoga and Kirkley also worked with local musicians, anthropologists, oral historians, linguists, sign painters and 3-D artists to create a richly fertile, evolving mix of sound and image.
For two weeks in June, 2015, photographer Maciek Pozoga and musicologist Christopher Kirkley spent time in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, generating a body of work titled Uchronia: The Unequivocal Interpretation of Reality.
The work explores and elaborates on a story Pozoga discovered on the Internet: how, in 1311, the Malian emperor Abubakari II left West Africa to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Mali was then rich - arguably the most affluent country in the world - but Abubakari wanted more: fame, perhaps, or additional land. He believed both to lie on the other side of the ocean, and he took a fleet of 2,000 ships to find it. In Africa, at least for some, Abubakari discovered America, in Western Europe it was Christopher Columbus, supposedly.
Don't forget to listen to “Uchronia: Field Recording From Alternate Reality” LP, catch up with this month's Carhartt WIP Radio featuring Sahel Sounds and look back at our shoot with Maciek from earlier in the year, LOS VALIENTES DEL MUNDO NUEVO.
