Brandt Brauer Frick have made name for themselves producing Techno without the technology, using classical instruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. The Berlin trio’s 2010 debut album You Make Me Real was a forward-thinking feat. They reworked it in 2011 on their second longplayer Mr. Machine - a Techno record totally recorded live by a ten-piece classical ensemble. From then on they toured around the globe, played in dark nightclubs, classical concert halls, and Festivals like Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz, Mutek, Sonar, or Open Source. On March 8 their third album Miami will be released and again Brandt Brauer Frick take a new direction to cross frontiers. They composed a record that resists comparisons and that is built on the spontaneous charm of improvisation. This time they wrote more songs then tracks and feature guest vocalists like Swedish singer Erika Janunger, founding member of Einstürzende Neubauten Gudrun Gut, British soulman Jamie Lidell, the to die for Russian DJ and producer Nina Kraviz as well as Om’Mas Keith - one third of Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Grammy awarded producer of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange album. The music is based on a lot of acoustic instrumentation - piano, violin, cello, harp, trombone, tuba, and percussions - and it sounds like music made by soulmates that know eachs others hearts very well. In cooperation with Carhartt WIP the trio now go on a Europe tour, where they will present their new stripped down live show - no ensemble this time, just the three protagonists, a specially built stage set, and a guest called Om'Mas Keith, a man that loves experiments as he confessed in an interview lately. To accompany the tour with some specialities out of their work we asked Brandt Brauer Frick to mix us an exclusive Carhartt Radio Show. They did and melted their remix works for artists such as Nôze or Francesco Tristano with some exclusive material that did'nt make it on the new longplayer. We hooked up with them too and asked them some questions about their heritage, their sound, and private pleasures.
Where and how did Brandt Brauer Frick start?
Brandt Brauer Frick: It started with a three days jam session in Daniel's garage studio in Wiesbaden, and it was intense from the very beginning.
If you could describe the Brandt Brauer Frick sound in one sentence, what would you say?
Brandt Brauer Frick: It sounds like elementary things like wood, metal, hair, and breath.
What was your biggest hit so far?
Brandt Brauer Frick: We didn't have something like a hit, I guess people who listen to our music rather listen to more than only one piece. Bop and Pretend are probably the best-known though.
What advice would you give to producers, DJs who are just starting out?
Brandt Brauer Frick: Dare to create your own world and use whatever you have, as long as it feels good!
How did you select the tracks for your Carhartt Radio show?
Brandt Brauer Frick: We chose mainly reinterpretations we made for other artists, also two pieces that ended up on our second album Mr. Machine, but that were reinterpretations or cover versions in the first place. And also two of our pieces that are not on any album. So it's simply about less known and more obscure music that we made!
What superpower would you like to have?
Brandt Brauer Frick: The Moonwalk...
If somebody gives you a million quid and you have 24 hours to rinse it, what would you do?
Brandt Brauer Frick: Many things, it would be a hell of a stress... But certainly not burn it like the KLF did! Still too many unfulfilled dreams to do that...
What is your first musical memory?
Paul Frick: I remember how in the Kindergarten, I was three or so, somebody showed me headphones. I was totally blown away by the fact that I could hear music so close to my ears. But I confounded it with ear-warmers (it was winter), and my parents bought me those instead, and there was of course no music "inside", and I was disappointed. I don't remember what music I had heard, probably eighties pop.
What was the first record you bought?
Paul Frick: Some sing-along-music for little children, don't remember.
What was the last record you bought?
Paul Frick: Max Graef - Pink Panther
What was the last book you read?
Paul Frick: Teju Cole - Open City
What is your favorite book?
Paul Frick: Impossible to tell, but coming to my mind: Uwe Johnson - Anniversaries.
What is your favorite film?
Paul Frick: Impossible to tell, but coming to my mind: Luis Buñuel - The Exterminating Angel.
Any forecast on the upcoming Brandt Brauer Frick tour presented by Carhartt? What do you expect? What do you fear?
Brandt Brauer Frick: It's going to be very special for us. We're very excited to perform the new album live. Basically, as we usually play very different live in comparison to our studio versions, we're also quite curious what our new songs will become and how they will change. And of course, we're extremely thrilled that Om'Mas Keith, with whom we collaborated on our song Plastic Like Your Mother!, will be our fourth band-member on that tour, singing, playing loads of instruments...which will again change our music a fair bit. Plus the new visual show...so as you see this tour is quite a step for us!
What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
Brandt Brauer Frick: We're looking forward to be surprised by a year that already seems to get very intense and basically crazy...
