Last year the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary. As one of the finest city festivals in Europe it underlines its class in 2013 again. From upcoming Tuesday on artists like Laurent Garnier, Seth Troxler, Jamie xx, Andres, Mos Def, Breton, Motor City Drum Ensemble, DJ Harvey, Caribou, or King Krule will play at one of the many venues in the city center of the capital of gastronomy in France. Carhartt WIP proudly presents a stage during the night action where artists such as the frenetic unforeseeable entertainer Dan Deacon, the Los Angeles-based instrumental Hip Hop producer Nosaj Thing, the French electronic border crossers Spitzer, the R&B meets House and 2-step rookie Jacques Greene, and Daniel Avery - one of the most talked about new producers in electronic music - perform among others. Instead of telling their story or describing their sound and stage action we sent some questions to Nuits Sonores director Vincent Carry to find out what artists he always wanted to book but never could and what are his highlights in this years line-up?
(Vincent Carry)
What is your musical background? What was the impetus behind the launch of Nuits Sonores 11 years ago?
Vincent Carry: I organised my first event in 1988, 25 years ago! It was the record label Mute’s birthday. My musical roots mix New Wave, Indierock, and the whole Manchester rave scene from the early 1990s. The revolution that Techno did was also a huge revelation.
Do you have a "wish list" of musicians you'd like to see perform at your festival ?
Vincent Carry: Sure. Acts like Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, The Pixies, Boards of Canada, or Nick Cave!
What’s the best thing about your job?
Vincent Carry: Having such a great team to work with that really keeps the passion of the project alive.
What’s the worst thing about your job?
Vincent Carry: Managing all the requests for invitations.
Can you give some advice to someone who is interested in starting his or her own festival?
Vincent Carry:
1 – Never sacrifice your artistic integrity!
2 – Have a real, strong concept!
3 – Editorialise. A Festival is a symbolic event that should tell a story!
What was the first festival you ever went to?
Vincent Carry: Leysin festival in Switzerland.
What is your best festival memory?
Vincent Carry: Vitalic’s first appearance at Sónar.
What is your best memory from Nuits Sonores?
Vincent Carry: Laurent Garnier’s closing set at Nuits Sonores 2005.
Are there any artists you’d like to book for Nuits Sonores but you couldn't? If so, why?
Vincent Carry: Boards of Canada - because they never play live! And Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Pixies, and Nick Cave - because they cost too much!
Who are you most looking forward to see at Nuits Sonores this year?
Vincent Carry: DJ Harvey, Breton (audiovisual live), Disclosure, Dan Deacon, and Acid Washed.
If you could spend a night partying with one of your idols, who would it be?
Vincent Carry: Serge Gainsbourg!
What are three albums that you'll never get tired of listening to?
Vincent Carry: Swell: Two Many Days Without Thinking, Kraftwerk: Radioactivity, and David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
What superpower would you like to have?
Vincent Carry: Omnipresence!
What is your motto?
Vincent Carry: Be ambitious, play together, and stay positive even when you’re up shit creek.
