Deep, funky and always with a wink in his face: Mayer Hawthrone is some one-of-a-kind DJ. From Soul to Funk, from Boogie to Hip Hop: when he warmed up the place the audience was already applicabled that this would be no ordinary concert night where you would get your average Hip Hop entertainment.
James Pants and his extremly versatile band The Royal Zodiacs proofed this with a show that is hard to categorize. Was it Punk? Was it Soul? Was it Funk? Was it Hip Hop? Was it Jazz? Or was it just a madmen that exploded on stage with some friends that knew perfectly how to play with their equipment? It was all of everything and maybe something more. Because James Pants was always funny, always willing to entertain like a grown up kid that wants to go back in his sandbox again. Some people did’nt understand his way of stepping into a fresh arena. Others been very very pleased to find out that Stones Throw still likes to swallow its pride and find new sounds far behind the normal.
Also Mayer Hawthrone, who just came around with a little repertoire of some songs, took hearts by storm with his cute white soul music delivered in a harvard graduate vintage look. When he sang James Pants entered the drums and The Royal Zodiacs changed instruments to back him, like a band that plays together with this soul man for ages.
Fore sure, the Stones Throw fans also got what they wait for. Because when Peanut Butter Wolf entered the wheels of steel he played a set fully loaded with classics from the Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and Rap history. The heads said thanks with waving hands and jumping arounds. But they often forgot that the most crazy dude would come after the legendary PBWOLF had done his part.
Because Dam-Funk lived up his name and played some Boogie and Funk from the past, present and future that mostly nobody had ever heared before. In between or upon the music he made sexy announcements to the movers and groovers. Now the message is spreaded and all over Europe the headz know what it means to get drowned in his unique funkmosphere.
To give a little impression about the outstanding tour we sent our photographer Schiko to Amsterdam, Vienna and Cologne to spy with his cam in the backstage area, to get some angles on stage that suggest another view on the shows. Here is what he did: a nice framed view of this wonderful tour, where some real soulmates show up with a unique entertaining showbag!
Nothing more to say than thanks to everyone involved: all artists,
peeps at Stones Throw, all promoters, tour management , coach driver,
agents, helping hands, photographers, film crew, journalists… missed
anyone? oh yes: you!
