Described as the “last great youth movement” by CRAIG SETARI of Sick of It All, the incendiary, pulsating second wave of New York Hardcore has left an indelible mark on culture at large. For this latest issue of WIP, we present a detailed retrospective of this era, unearthing unseen photos and outtakes, and speaking to the likes of Pete and Lou Koller of the band SICK OF IT ALL, Hoya Roc of MADBALL, and documentarian Drew Stone.
Additionally, we talk to Detroit techno originator JUAN ATKINS, as he prepares to bring his seminal 1980s act Cybotron on stage for the first time. Off the back of their performance-slash-installation Icebergs at Museo Marino Marini earlier this year, artist duo ORTAMIKLOS discuss their practise. NYC photographers Joshua Woods and Tyler Kohlhoff both present their own unique takes on the Carhartt WIP S/S19 collection.
Also: customization queen NICOLE MCLAUGHLIN unveils unseen pieces adorned with the Carhartt ‘C’, DJ and producer CRYSTALLMESS explains how the traditional Ivorian dance culture of ‘logobi’ informs her work, and artist and writer BRAD PHILLIPS documents the minutiae of his daily routine in the lead-up to an exhibition and reveals his well-honed procrastination techniques.
Issue 03 of WIP is now available in Carhartt WIP stores globally and at selected retailers.
