Having clocked up his directorial debut with Carhartt WIP’s Spring/Summer 2015 Video Campaign a couple of months ago, Joshua Gordon has kept the camera rolling and delivers a remarkable piece of fast-paced fiction featuring a fine pick of our current collection.
The photographer behind Carhartt WIP’s last two global campaigns just returned from Thailand, where he has been shooting portraits of prostitutes for a new book and spent a month with a feared teenage biker gang from Bangkok for his first full-length documentary.
Shot on 16mm film, his second video campaign for Carhartt embodies the sense of independence and personal signature he found the former one had lacked: „When I had first found myself working with a producer, location manager, actors and post production people, I felt pushed into a place I wasn't happy with and ended up with a piece that wasn't my own,“ Joshua says looking back at the last shoot, adding that this time, he decided to „cut the dead weight.“
Working with a staccato sequence of idiosyncratic shots, some of his closest friends as a cast, and a sonic backdrop composed by a musician he met back in his hometown of Dublin, he arrived at an organic piece of fast-paced fiction. „I wanted the film to look like a trailer for the type of movie I get excited about, so I drew inspiration from favorites like Gerald Kargl’s „Angst“ and Matthieu Kassowitz’ „La Haine,“ he shares. With its fierce rhythm and a focus on montage and mood, Joshua’s film could be the trailer of some trippy tragedy.
But it can just as well simply stand for itself and Carhartt WIP’s current collection.
