Taking place on the 88th day of the year (the number of keys on a standard piano),
Piano Day is an open opportunity for people around the world to celebrate the instrument. Piano Day is a concept first devised last year by German musician and producer
Nils Frahm, who wanted to give away an album of piano music to his fans for free. What started as just a little idea rapidly escalated into a worldwide phenomenon. The first edition happened 2016, where professional, amateur, young, old, all came together and celebrated the instrument through dozens of Piano Day events from the UK to France, Germany, Lithuania, Japan, and beyond.
Providing an evening of “Piano, grime, jazz and dance”, the lineup for the Nils Frahm-founded Piano Day at London’s Union Chapel by
Float will coordinate an event featuring performances from Norwegian modern jazz musician
Bugge Wesseltoft, East London MC and now 1-800 Dinosaur affiliate
Trim who will perform alongside pianist
Matthew Bourne, and Berlin-based percussionist
Andrea Belfi, a past collaborator of Frahm's, who will improvise alongside the piano and effects duo
Dead Light.
"Why does the world need a Piano Day?," posits Nils Frahm of the event. "For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener." So be a listener too, come by and get absorbed by the tone of the acoustic, stringed musical instrument that was invented some time around the year 1700.
Piano Day at Union Chapel is the first in the series of events from new London based label
Float who also announced their first release by Andrea Belfi.
