The Sound of Detroit series celebrates the incredibly fertile musical culture of Detroit, laying claim to some of the boldest and most vibrant pioneers in music’s history. In the first edition of the series Carhartt WIP pays homage to Dennis Coffey, Hasting Street Jazz Experience, Cybotron and, the Lyman Woodard Organisation.
To accompany it we will introduce each T-Shirt with a little text about the record whose cover is printed on it. Here comes the short story of Dennis Coffey Trio – Hair & Thangs (Maverick, 1969), writen by Alex Chase:
Dennis Coffey made his mark as a session guitarist at Detroit’s great musical success story of the 1960s: Motown. He is credited with introducing the wah-wah guitar sound and a heavy psychedelic feel to the largely clean-cut label, bringing it back in tune with the times. Hair & Thangs was his 1969 debut album, featuring several fuzzy, funky versions of songs from the hippie musical Hair.
