The Sound of Detroit series celebrates the incredibly fertile musical culture of Detroit, laying claim to some of the boldest and most vibrant pioneers in music’s history. In the first edition of the series Carhartt WIP pays homage to Dennis Coffey, Hasting Street Jazz Experience, Cybotron, and the Lyman Woodard Organisation.
To accompany it we will introduce each T-Shirt with a little text about the record whose cover is printed on it. Here comes the short story of Cybotron – Alleys Of Your Mind (Deep Space Records, 1981), written by Alex Chase:
Our Sound of Detroit range would be incomplete without this, the first release from techno pioneer Juan Atkins. The teenage Atkins loved European synthesiser groups such as Kraftwerk, but he didn’t think they were funky enough. Assisted by an older synth-obsessed Vietnam veteran named Rik Davis, Atkins took electronic music in a new direction and took his first step towards what became known worldwide as Detroit Techno.

The T-Shirts are available at Carhartt WIP stores, online, and in selected retailers around the world.
