The Sound of Detroit series celebrates the incredibly fertile musical culture of Detroit, laying claim to some of the boldest and most vibrant pioneers in music’s history. In the first edition of the series Carhartt WIP pays homage to Dennis Coffey, Hasting Street Jazz Experience, Cybotron and, the Lyman Woodard Organisation.
To accompany it we will introduce each T-Shirt with a little text about the record whose cover is printed on it. Here comes the short story of Hastings Street Jazz Experience – Detroit Jazz Composers Ltd. (Midnite Records, 1976), writen by Alex Chase:
During the 1940s and 1950s Hastings Street was the epicentre of black cultural life in Detroit, hosting the likes of John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. In 1959 the street fell victim to the city’s booming automobile trade when it was demolished to make way for the Chrysler Highway. In 1972 the Hastings Street Jazz Experience were named to commemorate the street’s place in the city’s cultural history, and this spiritual jazz LP became a highly sought-after rarity of the genre.
