Just recently Erykah Badu released the fourth instalment in a series of Fela Kuti box sets curated by famous musicians, following on from peers such as Brian Eno, ?uestlove and old Fela Kuti cohort Ginger Baker. Badu – a polymathic singer-songwriter, record producer, DJ, activist, and actress – chose seven records from 1976 to 1992, that illustrate the incomparable genius of Fela Kuti. The limited box set also includes a poster from Nigerian artist, illustrator and designer Lemi Ghariokwu, the man responsible for designing many of the iconic cover artworks for Fela's recordings. The box also features a booklet with essays from Badu and journalist Chris May, song lyrics of tunes like Yellow Fever or Coffin For Head of State as well as some exclusive photographs of Fela himself. To celebrate the release, Knitting Factory Records and Partisan Records have invited Erykah Badu to New York City to play an all vinyl DJ set that introduces her box set as well as other great politically charged tunes by the Nigerian co-inventor of Afrobeat. Carhartt WIP proudly joins the bash to give a grooving glimpse of things to come.
