On the 1st of March, Space @ Create will be hosting the launch of Florecast - a new skateboard magazine produced in Brighton with a focus on analogue photography. The launch will feature an exhibition of images which will be on display for two nights only.
The magazine was founded by Sam Roberts as a means to bring together some photographers he knew and respected in the skate world, who within a predominantly digital age, still have a strong appreciation of analogue techniques.
I wanted to somehow reward the effort, time and money that goes into their work by printing it in a large format without the clutter of too much editorial or any adverts, to showcase their work in something tangible – rather than them simply being thrown up on a tumblr or blog.
The magazine (a limited run of 100) will be available from the exhibition, which will feature selected images from the issue. The long term aim of the project is a series of quarterly exhibitions and events, bringing together the contributors, friends, and the usual ‘artsome’ crowds, and bringing back an element of socialisation that frequently gets lost amidst online promotion and social media.
I’ve got a bit of backing from Carhartt and a local Brighton based skateshop, but otherwise considering the only incentive for the contributors is a copy, some stickers, and a print from the exhibition, I’ve already got work from some top guys in this field – which is incredible. I think it really shows how the scene’s not simply driven by finacial incentives.
The print-based, limited edition publication documents skateboarding through non-digital photography and will feature the work of: Rich Gilligan (IRE), Josh Hotz (CA), Terry Worona (CA), Rich West (UK), Kyle Bunker (US), Daniel Evans (US), Steven Bullen (UK), Sam Roberts (UK), Alex Burrell (UK), Matt Thomas (UK), Pontus Alv (SWE), Nicolas Lebeau (FRA), Jerome Loughran (UK) and others.
