Artist Feature: Soulphiction

In the early Nineties Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction was part of the young and innocent Hip Hop scene in his hometown Stuttgart.

Back then already he started producing music inspired by Soul, Jazz, Funk, Afro and Reggae. A trademark the South German is keeping until today, even if Hip Hop is no more his discipline.
“For me Hip Hop lost attraction when the synthesizer sounds came into fashion. I love music that is sample orientated! I like it old school and the pureness of early House reminded me on that. That’s why I fell in love with it!” he explains about his change of style more then a decade ago.

Since 2000 he spreads his House model mostly on his own label Philpot Records using diverse pseudonyms like Jackmate, Supatone, Manmade Science or Soulphiction. Whatever he names himself, his productions are always ageless and highly recommended to those who love the deep tripping atmospheres of Detroit boys, like Moodyman, Theo Parrish or Omar S, though.

“I am mixing dirtiness with harmonies. That’s why my tracks are sexy” Baumann points out with a wink when you ask him about his formula for producing peerless music.

We asked him to do a Carhartt Radio Show to give some impression of his distinct art. By mixing his own new and upcoming Philpot material with artists like Break SL, Basic Soul Unit, The Mole or Krause Duo he emphasizes, that the heritage of Electronic Music made in Detroit has traveled all around the globe, to inspire artists for a deeper shade of Soul music.

    SomeOthaShip Radio Show

  • Exclusively and very personal: Carhartt Radio isn't just another DJ mix! Personally the creators themselves will broadcast selected music and individual shows. Label owners, DJs and artists will play, perform and talk about their own music and their backgrounds. That's the intimate amateur view, brought by pros.

Versatility is the buzzword — from bubble-bath-soul to technical death metal, from booty beats to nerdy hip hop from girl-pop to eclectic dubstep. The labels and artists involved in this project will represent their own genre in the stream and show the diversity of the musical world we live in.
